Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
